broccoli + oranges

Two more pages from the Cooking Calendar. I can't even begin to tell you how much I love the cute sledding couple! (Click to enlarge for readability.)

I Googled broccoli with oranges and came up with this salad...it sounds pretty good! I just might try this recipe over the weekend.

Broccoli-Orange Salad
1 lb (1/2 kg) broccoli
1 large orange
3 Tbsp (45 mL) almond oil (or hazelnut oil)
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1 Tbsp (15 mL) chopped ginger
2 Tbsp (30 mL) honey
2 Tbsp (30 mL) almond flakes

Wash broccoli; blanch for one minute in boiling salt water (1/2 tablespoon or 2 mL salt). Chill immediately in ice water to get a nice green color. Meanwhile zest and skin the orange; separate into segments. Squeeze lemon juice in a bowl and add chopped ginger, honey, lemon juice and almond oil. Mix well. Toss orange and broccoli; place on a plate and pour some dressing on top of the salad. Garnish with roasted almond. For more color add pink peppercorn.

I think I'm missing something here.
Why are they "red-letter" foods?
(am I being really dumb? is it something really obvious?)

I think it's because they are in season, at least in some parts of the U.S., in January. You're not being dumb! Red-letter is a strange phrase to use.
