Stashbusting Spicy Ripple

Lately I've been noticing a lot of stripy crochet afghans springing up around the crafty side of the web. The first one I found was Yarnstorm's (scroll down) lovely photo, which in turn apparently inspired Michelle from Green Kitchen to whip up one of her own, and to speak a little about the palette she was using. Because of her preferred palette, instead of that vintage beachside look, she ended up with what she thought was more of a 70s vibe. I don't think it looks as 70s as she thinks, more crayon-bright and cheerful.

Anyhow, Michelle's version of course inspired another blogger, Bella Dia, who made her own version, and also posted a very helpful tutorial.

And with that, I was all ready to roll, when Yarnstorm posted this stunning ripple version. Just beautiful. Okay, ripples! Caribbean ripples! Sold.

And then, of course, there was Alicia's, which made me gasp when I saw it. Her posts almost always do, her blog is so beautiful.

Anyway, the relentless peer pressure of crafty blogland won me over. Meet Spicy Ripple, a less crayon bright, less tropical, less 20s beachside and more spice and dirt I mean earth tones, because that's what's in my stash. Although I love all of those palettes, and want to make a stripy afghan in each of them, particularly the vintage beach house, I'd have to go out and buy yarn (the horror) and thus defeat the whole purpose of the stashbuster.

Apparently I have a lot of yarn in the stash that all sort of goes together. Now *this* looks 70s, but in a good, kind of Missoni way. At least that's what I keep telling myself. It love it, I'm so happy with how it's turning out, and it coordinates not only with everything in my house, but everything in my closet as well.

Starting right now, this minute, I am solemnly swearing *not* to start any more new projects until I finish the ones I've already started, but Ha. Ha. Ha. This time, I swear, though. Seriously, it's getting out of control. P.S. These ripples are really addictive, and fast, and I hope I run out of yarn before the Spicy Ripple becomes a Camry Cozy.

I totally love the colors in this afghan, and I love that you named it Spicy Ripple. I think it looks completely 70s, too - which is a good thing.

I love the stripe thing going around. Sure beats the high fever thing going around at our house. Have you seen the Flickr pool that Cassi made for afghans of stripey nature, including knit or crochet? Keep us updated. Mine is half done, just waiting to finish more pressing things first.
